The lacquered brass finish is clean and honest, the red vulcanite insulation ring remains intact, and both the prism and transit lock are present and fully functional. As an exceptionally well-preserved field instrument from the First World War, it would make a treasured gift for the collector or any gentleman with an interest in military history.

Cruchon & Emons were based in Switzerland with a London branch and produced some of the finest compasses supplied to British forces during the First World War. Verner’s Pattern instruments like our example were prized for accuracy and durability, and remain a benchmark among WWI-era compasses.

Prismatic marching compasses—known as Verner’s Pattern instruments after British officer Colonel William Willoughby Cole Verner, who refined and standardized their design—were issued to officers, artillery observers, engineers, and reconnaissance units. Their design allowed the user to read a bearing while sighting a distant landmark, making it essential for route-marching, artillery set-outs, and field navigation in the varied terrain so typical of the 1914–18 campaigns.

Dimensions: 2-7/8” x 2-1/8 x 3/4”
Weight: 5.4 oz.

Condition notes: Excellent condition overall. Lacquered brass case shows light surface rubbing and minor age marks typical of service use but no dents, cracks, or structural damage. Red vulcanite insulation ring remains intact with expected age crazing. Prism is clear with no chips, clouding, or separation, and the prismatic sight raises and lowers smoothly. Transit lock engages and releases properly. Hinged cover closes cleanly and sits flush; if closed tightly it may require firm pressure at the lip to open, a common trait of early brass-bodied examples. Damping fluid remains present with no visible bubbles, and the floating dial card spins freely and settles as intended. Interior card is clean and legible with no staining, warping, or deterioration. Glass is clear and free of cracks or fogging. Cover stamped “VERNER’S PATTERN VII”; body stamped “CRUCHON & EMONS LONDON”, the broad-arrow ordnance mark, Serial No. 39392, and 1915.
