In superb vintage condition, this substantial stainless steel reel combines satin-finished side plates with polished fittings and contrasting black handles and controls. Its imposing scale and clean industrial construction make it a striking display piece for a fisherman’s study, library, or beach house.

Built for serious saltwater fishing, and weighing more than 3 pounds, the Commodore was fitted with a Bickerdyke-style line guard, friction brake, screw-adjustable drag, ratchet check, and large-capacity spool. Allcock’s 1968 catalog specified capacity for 300 yards of 120-pound braided line and promoted the model for tunny, shark, conger, and other large saltwater fish. This is a genuine working reel, with spool and ratchet check operating as intended, and remains in excellent condition for its age.

Founded in 1803 in Redditch, Worcestershire—a region famed for its needle and tackle manufacturing—S. Allcock & Co. had by 1900 grown from a small hook and needle workshop into the world’s largest fishing tackle manufacturer. The firm produced an extraordinary range of reels, rods, flies, lures, lines, nets, and accessories, and its catalogs were circulated across the British Empire.

Dimensions: 6-3/4” H (including base) x 7-1/2” W (including handle) x 5-1/2” (including handle)
Weight: 3 lbs. 3.6 oz.

Condition notes: Excellent vintage condition overall, with light scratches and surface wear consistent with age and genuine use. Satin-finished side plates remain straight and clean, while polished fittings retain a bright finish. Small areas of localized oxidation and verdigris present around circular fasteners, consistent with past saltwater exposure; affected areas appear superficial and do not compromise structural integrity or operation. Black handles and controls remain intact with no cracks or significant damage noted. Spool turns freely, and ratchet check engages and operates as intended. Other controls appear complete and move normally. Reel has been gently cleaned and polished.
