At 3-1\/2 inches in length, this smaller, more portable scale was used by market traders, fishermen, and shopkeepers for weighing produce, catch, and small parcels.  Today, it would display comfortably in a gentleman’s kitchen, office, or weekend cabin.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFounded in London in 1760 by Richard Salter, Salter grew to become one of Britain’s leading manufacturers of spring balances, trade scales, and government-certified weighing instruments.  The Silvester patent, developed in the mid-19th century, refined the spring balance mechanism by improving accuracy and durability through a direct-reading sliding indicator, and remained in use across Salter’s pocket and trade scales into the early 1900s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDimensions: (Face) 3-5\/8” x 1-1\/4”; (Scale Including Ring \u0026amp; Hook) 7-1\/8 x 1-1\/4”\u003cbr\u003eWeight: 4.7 oz.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCondition notes: Very good antique condition overall with light wear consistent with age and use. Brass faceplate shows minor surface marks and scattered oxidation, with all graduations and lettering remaining clear and legible. Markings on dial include “SALTER’S POCKET BALANCE” and “SILVESTER’S PATENT.” Iron suspension ring shows small areas of rust, and the internal sliding mechanism exhibits areas of white corrosion visible through the viewing window, none of which appears to affect function or structural integrity. No visible cracks, structural losses, or repairs.
