By the 1880s his factory was producing hundreds of registered picture designs, supplying woven portrait and sporting images to retailers throughout Britain and overseas. Stevens’s work represents the first commercially successful system for mass-producing detailed pictorial images entirely in woven silk.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Final Spurt belongs to Stevens’s sporting picture series and depicts the decisive closing moments of the Boat Race, an annual event first run in 1829. Boat Race subjects were among the premium designs in Stevens’s catalog, and an example of this particular picture is held in the National Trust collection in the UK. Professionally framed in a later gold-colored wood frame with a French-style mat.  Frame and glass in excellent condition overall, with a small shallow dent present to the top side corner of the frame visible only upon close inspection and not apparent when viewed from the front. Wire hanger present and ready for hanging.  Original printed mat reads: “WOVEN IN SILK BY THOMAS STEVENS, INVENTOR AND MANUFACTURER, COVENTRY AND LONDON (REGISTERED).” Printed catalog sheet affixed to rear is a later reproduction of the original Stevens catalog and not period-original.
