Wilson 1/2-Inch Filletster Plane c. 1900-1930 | Vintage English Joinery Tool in Beech & Brass

For the craftsman … a handsome full-sized 1/2-inch filletster plane in beech, with a brass depth stop and skewed iron, marked “S. WILSON IPSWICH” and stamped with the name of the original owner. Dating to the early 1900s (c. 1900-1930), the plane is just over nine inches long, and is a remarkably clean and well-preserved example of its type, with a smooth patina and complete fittings. Still a perfectly functional tool, it would also make a striking display piece in a gentleman’s workshop or study.

Planes of this type were used by joiners and cabinetmakers to cut rebates—rectangular grooves or step cuts—for casework, doors, and window frames. The skewed iron allowed for clean, accurate cuts even across the grain, while the depth stop controlled the working depth and ensured consistent results.

S. (Sidney) Wilson was a firm of cutlers—tradesmen dealing in cutting tools—and tool merchant who occupied premises at 50 Upper Orwell Street in Ipswich, Suffolk for almost a century, closing in the 1980s. While not a manufacturer in the strictest sense, Wilson likely assembled or branded quality tools for sale through his shop to meet the needs of local craftsmen.

Dimensions (Body): 9-3/8 x 3-1/2” x 1-1/4”
Weight: 1 lb. 4 oz.

Condition Notes: Overall in excellent vintage condition, with light surface wear and small marks consistent with age and careful use. Solid beech body retains a smooth, even patina with no cracks or losses. Brass depth stop shows minimal tarnish and operates freely, and all fittings remain complete and secure. Skewed iron and wedge are intact and well-fitted; blade edge appears sharp, though we have not attempted to remove or hone it. Stamps are clearly legible on both ends of the body: “A.J. HAYWARD / S. WILSON / IPSWICH” on the front and “A.J. HAYWARD / 1/2” on the rear. Tool has been gently polished and waxed. Other items in photos not included.

All items are hand-wrapped and packed with care for secure delivery. We offer flat rate shipping via USPS Ground Advantage for $10, or USPS Priority Mail for $15.
