For the craftsman … a handsome late-Victorian English mitre square, dating to roughly 1870–1900, built with a rosewood stock, full 12-inch steel blade, and decorative brass lozenge inlays. One side of the stock bears an early nailed letter “M,” a common 19th-century workshop practice, along with other faint letters visible beneath the varnish, giving the piece real shop character. With its honest wear and warm patina, the tool would display beautifully on a gentleman’s desk, tool shelf, or workbench.
Mitre squares were used by cabinetmakers and joiners to mark and check 45-degree angles for picture frames, moldings, and fine casework. Our example shows several details typical of higher-grade models from the period, including a hand-forged blade, a brass toe plate to protect the working edge, and pinned brass lozenge inlays. The nailed ownership marks and early wear patterns further place it firmly in the Victorian workshop tradition.
Dimensions: (Blade) 12” x 2-7/8” (Stock) 6-3/4” X 2” X 5/8"
Weight: 9.7 oz.
Condition notes: Very good antique condition overall with honest surface wear consistent with age and use. Rosewood stock shows a warm, even patina with scattered small marks, including a chip on one edge (see photo), now smoothly worn and sealed beneath old varnish. One face of stock bears an early nailed letter “M,” along with a deliberately marked-out owner’s name and other faint letters visible but illegible beneath the varnish. Brass toe plate remains tight and intact with no lifting, splits, or losses. Brass inlays remain fully present and secure. Steel blade is straight and firmly fitted, showing minor surface pitting and darkened oxidation, with no cracks, bends, or structural damage noted. All joints remain solid with no looseness. Other items in photos not included.
