For the man of precision … a scarce one foot (12-inch) folding rule in boxwood with brass hinges and end caps, from the early 1900s, marked with the distinctive double-T “TRADE MARK” logo of T. Rabone & Sons. At less than half an inch wide, this narrow, pocket-sized format is less common than the standard two-foot examples and was likely intended for tailoring or other trades where portability mattered.  As such, it would make an ideal gift for the tool collector or a thoughtful accent for a gentleman’s desk or library shelf.

The double-T mark identifies the rule as the work of T. Rabone & Sons, a Birmingham-based firm later known simply as Rabone and eventually Rabone Chesterman. The company operated for well over 150 years, and its boxwood rules—produced in a wide range of configurations—often remain in service to this day.  One-foot versions like ours were made in far smaller numbers and are now relatively uncommon.

Dimensions: 12” x 3/8” x 3/16”
Weight: 0.9 oz.

Condition notes: Very good condition overall, with hinges and end caps fully intact and folding segments operating smoothly. Boxwood retains a warm, even patina with engraved measurements legible on both sides—though more faded on the outer face from handling. One side displays light ink or pen marks from prior use. Brass shows expected surface wear, with notable tarnish on the interior face but no structural issues. Minor splitting is visible along the outer edge where the boxwood has slightly separated from the brass shank extending from the central hinge; this appears completely stable and does not affect function or alignment.  Stamped on the inner face with TRADE MARK and the firm’s distinctive double-T logo in circles, partially worn but still visible.  No cracks or breaks to the folding joints, and segments close flush. A well-made and functional example with age-appropriate wear and character. See photos for more detail and DM shop with questions. Other items in photos not included.
