For the craftsman … a vintage Stanley folding boxwood caliper rule, Model No. 36-1/2R, circa 1940-1955. This 12-inch rule is crafted from solid boxwood with brass joints and a sliding brass caliper head for inside and outside measurements. Still fully functional with clear graduations and only light age-related wear, it would make a welcome addition to a gentleman’s workbench, desk, or tool collection.
The Stanley Rule & Level Company was producing caliper rules in boxwood as early as the 1850s. Combining a standard folding rule with a built-in caliper allowed machinists, patternmakers, and engineers to measure both external diameters and internal openings, and transfer dimensions without reaching for a separate instrument. By the early 1940s, the company were formally cataloging and marking right- and left-hand versions of the 36-1/2 as separate models. Our example is right-handed.
Dimensions: 12” (not including caliper head) x 11/16” x 5/32”
Weight: 1.9 oz.
Condition notes: Very good vintage condition overall with light wear, small marks, and areas of discoloration to the boxwood consistent with age and careful use. Boxwood arms retain smooth surfaces and remain straight and structurally sound with no cracks, splits, or separation at the folds. Marked “STANLEY,” “MADE IN U.S.A.,” “NO. 36-1/2R,” and “WARRANTED BOXWOOD,” all clear and legible. Graduations along both faces remain dark and readable, including 1/8 and 1/12-inch on one side, 1/16 and 1/10-inch on the other, with the brass caliper slide graduated to 1/32 inch. Brass caliper, hinge plates, and end caps show light tarnish and minor spotting consistent with age, with no dents, bends, or damage observed. Brass hinge joints remain tight and secure; rule folds smoothly and holds position as intended. Caliper slide extends freely within its channel and functions as designed for inside and outside measurements. Rule has been lightly cleaned and polished. Other items in photos not included.
