For the carpenter … a substantial American-made wooden jack plane, measuring 14 inches in length and dating to roughly 1900-1930. Formed in solid beech and fitted with its original wedge and iron, this traditional bench plane shows an even, time-earned patina from years of use. Its long sole, balanced proportions and solid working character make it well-suited to display on a library shelf or gentleman’s desk.
Jack planes of this length were standard stock-removal tools in early 20th-century workshops, used by joiners and carpenters to true boards, flatten surfaces, and prepare timber prior to finer smoothing. The longer sole allowed the tool to bridge high spots, while the wedge-secured iron could be adjusted quickly for heavier or lighter cuts. This pattern remained common in American shops well into the early 1900s before metal-bodied planes became the dominant form.
Dimensions: 14” x 2” x 5”
Weight: 1 lb. 6.4 oz.
Condition notes: Very good vintage condition overall. Beechwood stock displays even surface wear with scattered marks and areas of discoloration consistent with age and workshop use, with no structural cracks or losses observed. All components are present, including wedge and iron, which seat securely within the body. Wedge appears to be fixed in place with a later nail (see photos) and is not readily removable. Steel iron appears reasonably sharp but has not been freshly honed or tested in use. No discernible makers mark present. Tool has been lightly cleaned and waxed to remove surface grime while preserving original finish. Other items in photos not included.
