For the antiquarian … a hand-colored steel engraving of Llantisilio Church in Denbighshire, Wales, drawn by Henry Gastineau and engraved by Henry Adlard for Wales Illustrated, published in 1830. At nearly two centuries old, this genuine antique print remains beautifully detailed, presented in an attractive taupe mat with gilt ruling and a later frame (8-1/4 by 10-1/2 inches overall). A fine piece for collectors of Welsh views, print enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a distinctive accent for a gentleman’s office or study.

Henry Gastineau (1791–1876) was a respected Welsh artist and member of the Old Watercolour Society. His Wales Illustrated series, published by Jones & Co. of Finsbury Square, London, was one of the most ambitious topographical projects of its time, documenting castles, churches, and landscapes across the country.

Llantisilio Church, dating back to the 13th century, stands in the Vale of Llangollen near the Horseshoe Pass. Surrounded by wooded slopes and pasture, it is considered one of the most picturesque rural churches in North Wales. Gastineau’s engraving captures its quiet setting, with sheep grazing in the foreground and rising hills beyond.

Dimensions: Frame 8-1/4” x 10-1/2” x 1/2"; opening 6-1/8 x 4-1/8
Weight: 15.2 oz.

Condition notes: Overall in very good condition for its age. Hand-colored steel engraving shows minor foxing around the title area, which does not detract from the appearance and might be said to add character. Image detail remains clear and well defined. Brown mat with gilt ruling is in excellent condition, free of visible marks or stains. Later frame constructed with a wood outer section and composite gilt inset, typical of mid-20th century production. Frame displays three very small corner chips (two on the front, one on the back), none of which are clearly visible when viewed from the front. Frame retains its original hanging cord with metal rings and hook, secure and functional. Glass and backing are secure.  Attributed lower margin: “Drawn by H. Gastineau” and “Engraved by H. Adlard.” Reverse label reads: "This is an original steel engraving which has been colour tinted by hand from Henry Gastineau's 'Wales Illustrated' published 1830. It is a genuine antique print which can only increase and rarity and value over the years."  Other items in photos not included.
