1846 British Shipwreck Painting | Victorian Watercolor & Mixed Media in 13-1/4 x 16-7/8 Frame

For the romantic … a mid-19th-century British watercolor, initialed “W.B.” and dated 1846. Presented in a later metallic finish frame measuring approximately 13-1/4” x 16-7/8”, the painting depicts a wrecked wooden vessel below high coastal cliffs, with breaking surf, seabirds, and a small sail visible offshore.  A palette of muted brown, gray, blue, and ochre gives the work a quietly atmospheric quality, and the painting remains in excellent condition with no visible foxing, staining, or fading.

The toned paper, selective washes, and touches of opaque white present here are consistent with British sketching practice in the first half of the nineteenth century.  The dark wreck anchors the composition, while the curve of the shoreline carries the eye toward the cliffs, distant headland, and small sail offshore.  A dramatic coastal subject and the work’s unusually clean condition make this a highly distinctive period sketch and an ideal fit for a gentleman’s study, library, or office.

Condition notes: Excellent antique condition overall, with no visible foxing, staining, tide marks, fading, or tears. Paper surface appears clean and stable beneath mat, with muted brown, gray, blue, and ochre tones retaining good definition throughout. Initials “W.B.” and date “1846” remain clearly visible in lower corner. Charcoal drawing, selective washes, and touches of opaque white remain well preserved. Mat remains clean overall, with no visible foxing or staining noted. Later Larson Juhl Canaletto wood frame with metallic finish presents well overall and shows very light surface wear, minor marks, and small areas of rubbing consistent with age and gentle handling, none of which detract from display. Reverse shows later framing materials, paper backing, brown framing tape, screw eyes, and hanging cord; hanging hardware appears secure. Non-glare acrylic glazing is intact with no cracks, chips, or visible surface damage.
