For the man of style … a stunning late Victorian sterling silver vesta case by Minshull & Latimer of Birmingham, hallmarked for 1898–99. Finely engraved with a shield cartouche on one side and foliate scrollwork on the other, it retains its original suspension loop, a crisp hinge and spring, and a ridged base for striking matches. Compact, tactile, and a standout in both condition and detail, it would make a treasured gift for any gentleman who appreciates fine accessories and classic style.
Vesta cases—or match safes—were an essential “everyday carry” item of their time, used to hold vestas (short friction matches) and protect them from moisture. Introduced in the early 1800s, vesta cases became widely fashionable by mid-century, and were particularly popular as gifts. They were as much a mark of taste as they were a practical tool, and finer examples like ours remain highly collectible.
Minshull & Latimer were active in Birmingham from 1890 to 1902 and specialized in small accessories such as sovereign cases, card cases, and vesta cases. Their output was of consistently high quality, but because their working period was brief, surviving pieces are much less common than those of larger firms.
Dimensions: 1-7/8” x 1-3/8” x 3/8”
Weight: 0.9 oz.
Condition notes: Overall in excellent condition, displaying light wear consistent with age. Sterling silver body retains a bright surface with finely engraved foliate scrollwork; some light rubbing present but crisp detail remains evident across both faces. Suspension ring intact and secure. Hinge and spring action strong, lid pops open cleanly and closes firmly with a tight fit. Ridged base for striking matches remains well defined. Small dent on top of lid opposite hinge. Clear Birmingham hallmarks: maker’s mark “M&L” for Minshull & Latimer, lion passant for sterling standard, anchor for Birmingham assay, and date letter “Y” for 1898–99. Item has been lightly polished, preserving natural patina in recesses. Other items in photos not included.
