For the man on the go … an exceptional James Dixon & Sons leather-clad hip flask, Model 585A, dating from the 1920s. Measuring a substantial 6 inches in height and holding 3/8 pint (about 7-1/2 ounces), it features a clear glass body, an elegant black leather covering, a removable silver-plated drinking cup, and a cork-lined bayonet-style cap. In excellent antique condition, its generous proportions and dark leather covering make it a particularly handsome example of its type, equally at home on a gentleman’s desk, home bar, or in an overnight bag.
Founded in Sheffield in 1806, James Dixon & Sons became one of Britain’s major manufacturers of silver and electroplated wares, producing tableware, sporting goods, and a wide range of hip flasks. A larger model like ours was designed for longer outings, train journeys, shooting weekends, or other occasions when a smaller pocket flask would have fallen short of the mark.
Dimensions: 6” x 3-3/4” x 1-3/16”
Weight: 13.8 oz.
Condition notes: Excellent vintage condition overall. Silver plate on the detachable cup remains bright, showing only light surface marks from age and handling and no visible dents or distortion. Bayonet-style cork-lined cap screws on and off smoothly and secures firmly in place. Black leather wrap is tight, clean, and well-fitted with very little wear, and no lifting, cracks, or separation at seams. Glass body is clear and free of visible cracks, chips, or clouding. Detachable silver-plated cup removes easily and fits securely. Base stamped “J D & S” with the Dixon trumpet mark, “3/8 PT”, “EPBM,” “585A,” and “MADE IN ENGLAND.” Collar beneath cap stamped “JD&S” on one side and the Dixon trumpet logo on the other.
