For the romantic …  a 1922 Macmillan pocket edition of “The Well-Beloved” by Thomas Hardy, bound in deep red cloth with decorative gilt stamping. Part of Hardy’s Wessex Novels series, our copy remains in very good antique condition, with light shelf wear, clean pages, and a tight, square binding. The front endpaper bears the neatly written signature of a previous owner, adding a small but appealing note of personal history.  It would make a refined and understated addition to a gentleman’s library.

One of Hardy’s more introspective and unusual novels, The Well-Beloved follows sculptor Jocelyn Pierston as he pursues an idealized vision of love that seems to pass from one woman to another across generations. Set against Hardy’s fictional Wessex landscape, the novel explores illusion, longing, and the quiet tragedy of mistaking perfection for happiness. It stands apart from the more dramatic social novels such as Tess and Jude in favor of a slower, more reflective examination of character and regret.

Dimensions: 4-7/16” x 6-7/8” x 7/16”
Weight: 7.7 ounces

Condition Notes: Overall in very good antique condition, with clean, well-preserved pages and a firm, square binding showing no looseness, cracking, or separation. Red cloth boards retain strong color and clear decorative gilt stamping, with only light surface wear and mild rubbing consistent with age. Spine shows slight shelf wear at the head and tail, with no fraying or structural weakness. Gilt lettering remains legible and well preserved. Interior pages are clean and free from staining or odors, with faint age-related browning visible along the outer edges of some leaves (see photos). Front endpaper bears the neatly written signature of a previous owner. A well-kept, attractive example of this 1922 Macmillan pocket edition. Other items in photos not included.
