For the craftsman … a 1930s British carpenter’s pencil compass, also known as a scribing compass, in hardwood (likely beech), brass, and steel. Measuring 12 inches long, one leg ends in a fixed steel point, while the other carries a brass pencil holder with adjustable screw and lever clamp. In very good antique condition, its substantial size, rich patina and brass fittings make it an ideal display piece for a gentleman’s desk or library shelf, or as part of a collection of vintage tools.
Carpenters, joiners, cabinetmakers, and patternmakers used compasses like this to mark circles, arcs, and curved panels on timber. The steel point established the center while a pencil or marking lead was secured in the brass holder and drawn around the required radius. Our example is stamped “BRITISH MADE” on one leg and “PROV. PAT” on the brass holder, indicating British manufacture and a provisional patent claim for the clamping mechanism.
Dimensions: 12” x 1-13/16” x 7/8”
Weight: 6.8 oz.
Condition notes: Very good antique condition overall. Hardwood legs are straight, solid, and free from major splits or warping. Wood shows light surface wear, small marks, and areas of darker stain or polish visible when compass is unfolded. Brass fittings display light age-related tarnish but remain attractive overall. Pencil holder shows small dents, particularly around area where tightening screw has pressed against inserted pencils during use. Steel point remains complete and relatively sharp, with light surface oxidation but no pitting noted. Pivot opens and closes as intended and holds selected position firmly. Markings remain legible, reading “BRITISH MADE” on one leg and “PROV. PAT” on brass holder. Tool has been lightly cleaned and polished. Other items in photos not included.
