1930s German Brass Pocket Compass | Vintage Navigation Aid, c. 1930-1939

For the man on the go … a German brass-cased pocket compass, measuring a little over 1-1/2 inches in diameter, and dating to around 1930-1939. Marked “GERMANY” on the dial, it features a 0–360 degree scale, English cardinal and intercardinal points, a suspension ring, and a side-operated lock that secures the magnetic needle while the compass is being carried. Compact, functional, and in remarkably good condition, it would make an ideal gift for the traveler, outdoorsman, or collector of vintage instruments.

German makers like Lufft, Busch, and Stockert exported large numbers of small pocket compasses during the interwar period for general navigation and outdoor use. Instruments of this type were carried by walkers, travelers, motorists, and others who needed a compact directional aid, with the suspension ring allowing the compass to be attached to a chain, cord, or rucksack.  The needle-lock mechanism protected the pivot and needle from continual movement while the compass was in transit.

Condition notes: Excellent vintage condition overall. Brass case shows light surface wear consistent with age and use, with more noticeable rubbing, scratches, and finish wear to rear plate. Glass cover is clean, clear, and free from visible chips or scratches. Dial markings remain crisp, clear, and fully legible. Magnetic needle is responsive and side-operated locking mechanism functions as intended. Compass appears to work properly but has not been tested for directional precision or accuracy. Suspension ring is intact and secure. Other items in photos not included.
