For the man on the go … an impressive 1930s-era gentleman’s flask by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield, perhaps the best-known English maker of drinking flasks in the 19th and early 20th centuries. At 5-inches high and holding 3/16 pint (about 4 ounces), it was sized to slip easily into a man’s pocket – whether fishing, hunting, or traveling by rail. The flask’s bayonet-style cap is lined with cork and opens easily with a simple half twist, whilst the lower half is a removable drinking cup in silver plate. The upper portion is clad in leather with narrow viewing windows on either side. In remarkable condition, it would make an ideal gift for the traveler and a stunning display piece for a desk or side table.
Founded in 1806, James Dixon & Sons quickly rose to prominence as one of England’s most respected and prolific makers of fine metal goods. Renowned for their craftsmanship and innovation, the company produced a wide range of luxury items, including silver-plated hip flasks, tableware, and sporting goods. The Dixon trumpet symbol, stamped on our flask below the cap and on the base, was adopted to prevent confusion with James Deakin & Sons, another Sheffield manufacturer with similar initials.
Dimensions: 5-1/8” x 3-1/8” x 1-3/16”
Weight: 10.9 oz.
Condition notes: Excellent antique condition overall. Silver plate remains bright, with only a small area of wear visible on one side of the removable cup. Bayonet cap opens and closes securely and retains its cork lining. Cap shows slight surface crazing and light wear but no visible dents. Leather wrap is complete and smooth, with minor splits at the edge near the cap; leather remains secure and structurally sound. Rim stamped with JD&S and the company’s trumpet symbol. Base stamped with JD&S, the company’s mark, EPBM (for Electro Plated British Metal), 583A (model number), and a separate “D.” Other objects in photos not included.
