For the outdoorsman … a fine 3-piece split cane fly rod, “The Popular” model from Glasgow outfitter Alex Martin Ltd, dating from the 1940s. Measuring 9 feet 10 inches fully assembled, it is in exemplary condition for its age, retaining its original burgundy wraps, snug brass ferrules, cork handle, wooden ferrule plugs, and a red agate-lined butt guide. The rod comes housed in its original canvas case with stitched Alex Martin label. A beautiful piece of heritage tackle, and a special gift for an angler, equally suited for display in a gentleman’s den or study or for careful use on the water.
Split cane rods were the standard for serious anglers in the first half of the 20th century. Made from Tonkin bamboo and built in multiple sections for portability, they were valued for their strength and responsiveness. Split cane rods were widely used for trout and salmon fishing in Britain and remained popular until fiberglass began to dominate the market in the 1950s.
Founded in 1778, Alex Martin was among Scotland’s most respected suppliers of sporting goods, with premises in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Stirling. The Popular line was introduced as a dependable, mid-grade rod, built for Martin by specialist makers such as Sharpe’s of Aberdeen. Always finished to a high standard, these rods stood apart from cheaper tackle of the era and were a favorite for loch and river fishing well into the mid-20th century.
Length: 9’ 10” Assembled (Bottom 41-3/8”, Middle 37-1/4”, Top 39-3/8”)
Weight: 11.6 oz (with bag), 8.8 oz (no bag, with ferrules)
Condition notes: Overall in excellent condition, with only light evidence of handling and careful use. Split cane sections remain straight, full length, and well finished, with original burgundy wraps bright and secure throughout save for one guide on the mid-section showing a trace of fraying. Brass ferrules are clean and snug-fitting, with original turned wooden ferrule plugs preserved. Cork handle shows expected darkening and wear from use but remains firm and intact. Butt is fitted with a red agate-lined guide set in brass, free of chips or cracks. Original canvas bag with stitched Alex Martin label is included, structurally sound with compartments intact, showing only minor staining from age. Rod has not been tested for action, and is offered as a collectible example of mid-20th century Scottish tackle. Other items in photos not included.
