1943 18-Inch Spirit Level by W. Marples & Sons | WWII British Military-Issue Tool

For the historian … an imposing 18-inch English spirit level by W. Marples & Sons of Sheffield, dated 1943 and stamped with the government broad arrow mark, confirming wartime military issue. Made with a solid hardwood body and brass top plate, it remains straight, clean, and fully functional, with a single horizontal viewing window intended for setting true, level surfaces over longer spans. Showing honest wear consistent with years of service, it retains the warmth and material presence that would display beautifully on a gentleman’s desk or library shelf.

W. Marples & Sons was already a well-established toolmaker by the time of the Second World War, and during the conflict supplied tools under British government contract while continuing civilian production. Levels of this type were issued to Royal Engineers and military works crews, where the single horizontal vial reflects its intended role: establishing level foundations, platforms, and equipment beds rather than fine cabinet joinery.

Condition Notes: Very good vintage condition overall, with light surface wear consistent with age and service use. Hardwood body remains straight and structurally sound, showing a warm, even patina with minor surface marks and some light staining to the underside.  Single horizontal vial is present, clear, and fully functional, with bubble responsive and easy to read. Brass top plate shows gentle rubbing and age-appropriate wear; one corner of the plate is lifting slightly at the end (see photo), though all screws remain original and secure and this does not affect function. Brass top plate is stamped “W. MARPLES & SONS SHEFFIELD ENG.” and “WARRANTED CORRECT.” Body is marked with the government broad arrow and dated 1943, both clear and legible. Level has been lightly waxed and polished. Due to size, item will not be gift-boxed. Other items in photos not included.
