1950s Elvicta 15-Inch Spirit Level in Mahogany & Brass | Vintage English Tool by Elliott Lucas

For the craftsman …  a stunning mid-century spirit level by English maker Elliott Lucas, measuring 15 inches long and crafted in solid hardwood (likely mahogany) with polished brass plates and end caps.  Both glass vials remain fully functional, making this a perfectly usable tool—though its warm patina and elegant form would also serve as a striking display piece in a gentleman’s workshop or study.  

Elliott Lucas was founded in Birmingham in the 1930s, and relocated to Cannock, Staffordshire around 1950, where it introduced the "Elvicta" line—a range of professional-grade levels and precision tools. Our level, marked “Cannock England,” dates to the 1950s and hails from an era when tools like this were still made largely by hand, shaped from hardwoods and brass rather than molded from plastic and die-cast alloys.

Condition Notes: Overall in very good vintage condition, with surface wear and scattered marks consistent with age and use. Solid hardwood body retains a warm, rich patina throughout. Both glass vials remain fully intact and functional, with no visible cracks or leakage. Brass end caps and side plates show light surface wear, but remain securely fastened with original screws.  Central brass plate marked: “ELLIOTT LUCAS – ELVICTA - CANNOCK ENGLAND.”  A handsome and well-preserved example of a mid-century English spirit level ready for display or gentle use. Piece has been lightly polished and waxed.  Other items in photos not included.
