1950s Swordfish 10-Meter Cloth Tape Measure | Mid-Century Chinese Import with Brass Crank, Textured Resin Case

For the collector … a 10-meter (33-feet) cloth tape measure from Swordfish Brand dating from the 1950s, featuring a brass crank handle, dual-scale cloth tape, and a richly textured phenolic-resin case designed to mimic stitched leather. The folding brass crank operates smoothly, and the cloth tape—marked with the Swordfish name and stylized fish logo—remains legible and fully retractable.  As a practical tool turned mid-century collectible, this would make a unique display item for a gentleman’s desk, workshop, or library shelf.

Swordfish was one of several mid-century export brands produced by Chinese manufacturers for Western hardware markets. These tape measures were typically distributed through catalogs and trade suppliers in Britain and the Commonwealth, appealing to tradesmen and engineers seeking inexpensive but serviceable measuring tools. The materials—cloth tape, brass fittings, phenolic case—mirror construction seen in earlier British and German models, but streamlined for international export during the postwar era.

Condition notes: Very good vintage condition overall. Resin case retains its molded texture displaying light surface wear consistent with age and use, including small scuffs and handling marks throughout. Brass crank folds flat and operates smoothly; crank assembly is firmly attached, though the central spool shows minor lateral movement when pulled, likely due to manufacturing tolerances rather than damage or deterioration. Cloth tape is clean, legible, and fully retractable, though it has not been extended to its full 10-meter length. Tape bears red “10 METRES” marking on one side and “33 FT” on the reverse, along with the “Swordfish Brand” trade mark and stylized fish logo.  Brass tape end shows red ink or paint residue, likely from the original manufacturing process.
