For the outdoorsman … a compact 2-1/2-inch Nottingham-style wooden fishing reel, turned from rich chestnut-toned hardwood with twin wood handles and warm brass details, dating to around 1900-1930. The spool turns freely, and the hardwood shows only honest wear from past use on stream and lake. Its small scale, graceful profile, and mellow varnish make this an ideal gift for the angler and an appealing display piece for a gentleman’s desk or side table.

Nottingham reels originated in and around Nottingham, England, evolving from simple wooden bobbins used in the region’s lace-making industry. Typically turned from mahogany, walnut, or other dense hardwoods, these reels were prized for their light weight and free-running performance on rivers and streams. Early wooden Nottingham patterns remain valued today for their humble engineering, tactile materials, and as a link to the golden age of British angling.

Dimensions: 2-1/2” x 1-7/8” D (Body) x 2-1/2” (Foot)
Weight: 4.1 oz.

Condition notes: Very good antique condition overall with only light, age-appropriate wear. Turned hardwood body retains smooth, even varnish with a warm chestnut tone and no cracks, splits, or structural weakness. One small notch is present along the front rim (see photo), stable and not affecting function or display. Twin wood handles remain intact with light surface wear from use. Brass foot and cross-strap show tarnish and localized corrosion consistent with age; fittings secure throughout. Spool turns freely with little to no resistance; no on/off check. Reel has been lightly cleaned and waxed.  Other items in photos not included.
