For the traditionalist … a 24-inch Hockley Abbey folding ruler, Model No. 1157, made by Rabone in the slimmer 3/8-inch format, and dating to around 1900-1920.  Crafted from boxwood with brass hinges and end caps, the ruler shows a deep, even patina from years of handling in the workshop, with crisp, legible markings throughout.  Its narrow profile and warm tone make it as well suited to display on a gentleman’s desk, shelf, or workbench.

Founded in 1784, Rabone was one of England’s leading makers of measuring and layout tools for the building trades.  The Hockley Abbey mark was a Rabone trade name used on folding rules around the turn of the century, after the district in Birmingham where John Rabone & Sons operated their works.  The slimmer format of the 1157 model reflects the needs of joiners and cabinetmakers who needed a lighter, less bulky rule for working at the bench rather than heavy site use.

Dimensions: 24” x 3/8” x 3/16”
Weight: 1.4 oz.

Condition notes: Excellent antique condition overall with honest wear from age and use. Boxwood retains a warm, even patina with light surface marks consistent with age and handling. Localized area of darker discoloration present adjacent to central hinge, likely residue from early workshop repair or adhesive, now stable and not affecting structure or function. Brass hinges and end caps are clean and intact with no visible corrosion; all fittings remain tight and original. Graduations and maker markings are clear, dark, and fully legible throughout. Rule opens and closes smoothly with good hinge tension. Arms do not align perfectly when folded, consistent with age, but rule folds securely and displays well.  Rule has been lightly waxed and polished.  Other items in photos not included.
