For the artisan … a handsome mid-century 24-inch Rabone folding ruler, Model No. 1380. Crafted from solid boxwood with brass joints and endplates, this two-foot rule dates to the 1950s and remains in very good vintage condition, with clear, legible markings and smooth, precise action. A classic example of English craftsmanship, it remains perfectly usable but would also display equally well on a gentleman’s desk or workshop shelf.
John Rabone & Sons, founded in Birmingham in the early 19th century, grew to become one of Britain’s most respected makers of precision measuring tools. By the 1950s, the firm was exporting widely, and models like the No. 1380 were produced for professional joiners, cabinetmakers, and engineers who required reliable, durable rules for daily use. These boxwood folders represent the mature phase of Rabone’s wooden-rule production, just before later composite materials became standard.
Dimensions: 24” x 3/4” x 5/32”
Weight: 3.1 oz.
Condition notes: Very good vintage condition overall displaying honest wear consistent with age and use. Boxwood body retains good color and a smooth surface, with scattered handling marks throughout, light staining, and small areas of darkening. Two small hairline cracks are present at approximately the 10-inch and 14-inch marks, visible only upon close inspection and not affecting structural integrity or use. Brass joints and endplates show minor surface oxidation and light tarnish, with no looseness, cracking, or distortion; all fittings remain secure and original. Graduations and maker markings are clear and dark, with the original rounded mid-century style numbers fully legible along both sides. Rule folds and unfolds smoothly with even, consistent tension and no stiffness or misalignment. Other items in photos not included. Rule has been lightly waxed and polished.
