For the artisan … a very clean Stanley 24-inch folding rule, Model No. 68, dating from about 1895-1918. Crafted from solid boxwood with a round brass hinge and brass end caps, it retains crisp graduations and remains in exceptional condition for its age. Still completely functional a century later, it would make a treasured gift for the craftsman or teacher, or anyone who appreciates early American hand tools.
The No. 68 was a cornerstone of Stanley’s ruler line for decades, a simple, compact four-fold model used as an everyday measuring tool by carpenters, joiners and cabinetmakers for layout and stock measurement. The simpler, round hinge and “STANLEY RULE & LEVEL CO” markings help date our example to before 1920, after which the company’s branding shifted to the simpler “STANLEY.”

Condition notes: Very good antique condition overall with light, age-consistent wear and scattered small surface marks throughout. A few localized areas of discoloration, likely old ink marks, are visible but stable and unobtrusive. Boxwood sections remain straight with smooth surfaces and no cracks, splits, or separation at the folds. Marked “STANLEY RULE & LEVEL CO,” “WARRANTED,” “NEW BRITAIN CONN USA,” and “BOXWOOD,” all clear and legible. Graduations remain dark and readable across all four sections, 1/8-inch on one side and 1/16 on the other. Brass hinge and end caps show minor surface tarnish, with no bends, looseness, or loss of integrity. Joints are tight and secure; rule folds and unfolds easily and holds position firmly when extended. Rule has been lightly cleaned and polished. Other items in photos not included.
