For the outdoorsman … an unusual late-19th/early-20th century Nottingham-style wooden fishing reel with a wonderfully timeworn, river-earned surface. The darkened hardwood, brass foot, and original braided silk line speak to decades of honest use, giving it a distinctly aged character. The two handles made of bone (likely stag) are highly uncommon and point to a small maker rather than factory production, making this example especially distinctive for display in a gentleman’s study, on a library shelf, or in a fly-fishing vignette.
Nottingham reels originated in and around Nottingham, England, evolving from simple wooden bobbins used in the region’s lace-making industry. Typically turned from mahogany, walnut, or other dense hardwoods, these reels were prized for their light weight and easy, free-running performance on rivers and streams. Early wooden Nottingham patterns remain highly collectible today for their humble engineering, tactile materials, and as a link to the golden age of British angling.
Dimensions: 3-1/2” H x 1-7/8” D (Body) x 3” (Foot)
Weight: 5.6 oz.
Condition notes: Good antique condition overall with expected wear from long-term use. Darkened hardwood body shows deep, time-earned patina with surface scuffing, handling marks, and age-darkened areas but no cracks, splits, or structural instability. Brass foot and cross-strap display tarnish, discoloration, and surface wear typical of a working reel of this period; all fittings remain firmly seated. Both handles are made of bone (likely stag); each shows irregular shaping and age toning, and one handle has a small chip at the tip, visible on close inspection but stable and not affecting display. Original green braided silk line remains wound on the spool, with an earlier, thicker brown line visible beneath; both show age and stiffness. Spool rotates but with noticeable resistance, possibly related to line tension or internal wear. Reel has been lightly cleaned while retaining its original patina and character.
