6-Inch Starback Wood & Brass Fishing Reel | Vintage English Fishing Tackle, c. 1920-1940

For the angler … an impressive 6-inch diameter English wood and brass starback fishing reel dating to the interwar years, around 1920-1940. Weighing a little over 2 pounds, the reel is constructed with hardwood side plates, a brass spool face, brass starback frame, twin wooden handles, and an on/off ratchet mechanism.  Its substantial size, warm wood tones, and polished brass details make it an ideal display piece for a gentleman’s study, fishing lodge, or lakeside retreat.

Large centrepin reels of this type were used for heavy freshwater and sea fishing, where their generous size allowed for rapid line retrieval and substantial line capacity.  Before fixed-spool reels became commonplace, large wooden reels were a practical choice for pier and boat fishing, particularly when heavier lines and larger fish like salmon were involved.  Ours remains in excellent condition for its age, showing only light wear from honest use in the field.

Condition notes: Excellent vintage condition overall. Hardwood body remains structurally sound and retains rich, even color throughout. Minor surface wear is present consistent with age and use, including scattered scratches, scuffs, and small handling marks. Varnish shows localized losses and rubbing along portions of outer rim, most notably at edges, while remaining finish retains attractive, dark tones throughout.  Brass components display minor oxidation, tarnish, and discoloration consistent with age. One screw is missing from starback frame, though remaining structure remains secure and stable. Twin wooden handles remain intact and turn freely. Spool rotates smoothly, and on/off ratchet mechanism operates as intended. Brass foot stamped “MADE IN ENGLAND.”  Reel has been gently cleaned and polished while preserving age-appropriate patina.
