8-Inch Spirit Level by Guaranteed Tools Limited c. 1938–1942 | Vintage English Brass & Wood Tool

For the craftsman … a finely preserved late 1930s English spirit level by Guaranteed Tools Ltd (GTL), measuring 8 inches in length, and made with a hardwood body, brass top plate, and brass end shoes.  Fitted with both horizontal and vertical vials, it remains straight, bright, and fully functional, with crisp markings and remarkably little wear for its age. Dating from roughly 1938-1942, this is a handsome, practical tool that would display beautifully on a gentleman’s desk, side table, or workshop shelf.

Guaranteed Tools Ltd operated from Chilwell Street in Finsbury, London, and were most active during the 1920s and 1930s, producing solid, workmanlike measuring and layout tools for the domestic and trade market. Their range included spirit levels, squares, planes, and rulers, often sold through mail-order catalogs and trade suppliers.  Compared to larger Sheffield makers, surviving GTL products are encountered far less frequently today, especially in this type of condition, making our example a distinctive find for the collector or anyone who appreciates old tools.

Condition Notes: Excellent vintage condition overall, with only very light surface wear consistent with age and careful use. Hardwood body retains a smooth, evenly toned surface with minimal marks or handling wear. Both horizontal and vertical glass vials are present, clear, and fully functional. Brass top plate and brass end shoes remain clean and well fitted, showing only gentle rubbing and minor age-appropriate surface marks, with no dents, lifting, or separation. All original slotted screws are present and secure. Top plate is stamped “GTL,” “BRITISH MADE,” and “WARRANTED CORRECT,” all clear and legible. No cracks, chips, warping, or repairs observed. Level has been lightly cleaned and polished. Other items in photos not included.
