For the collector … a spectacular 3-inch Nottingham-style wood and brass fishing reel dating from the early 1900s, made by Allcock, one of the best-known names in British angling. In outstanding condition for its age, the reel features a mahogany body with finely turned concentric rings, gleaming brass fittings, and twin ebonite handles mounted on brass plates—a hallmark of Allcock’s higher-quality reels. A true collector’s piece that would make a striking display in a gentleman’s study, library, or weekend cabin.
Nottingham-style reels originated in and around Nottingham, England, evolving from simple wooden bobbins used in the region’s lace-making industry. Typically constructed from mahogany, walnut, or other dense hardwoods, these reels were designed to be light, free-running and ideal for river fishing. Though eventually eclipsed by metal centerpin designs, early Nottingham reels are now highly collectible for their elegant construction, quality brasswork, and association with the golden age of handmade tackle.
Founded in 1803 in Redditch, Worcestershire—a region famed for its needle and tackle manufacturing—S. Allcock & Co. had by 1900 grown from a small hook and needle workshop into the world’s largest fishing tackle manufacturer. The firm produced an extraordinary range of reels, rods, flies, lures, lines, nets, and accessories, and its catalogues were circulated across the British Empire. Early Allcock reels are increasingly scarce and are among the most collectible items of vintage British tackle.
