Antique 8-Inch Spirit Level by E. Preston & Sons | English Brass & Hardwood Tool c. 1890-1915

For the craftsman … an 8-inch English brass-bound spirit level by E. Preston & Sons of Birmingham, dating to around 1890-1915.  Constructed from solid hardwood (likely rosewood or mahogany) and a brass top plate, it features a single horizontal vial and a compact form suited to bench work and cabinetmaking. The vial remains intact and functional, and the body and top plate show light, even wear consistent with age and use.  The level’s simple, elegant design would sit comfortably on a gentleman’s desk, shelf, or workbench.

Founded around 1825, E. Preston & Sons were one of the few English tool makers producing levels at scale within a specialized facility.  Their levels appear consistently in 19th-century trade catalogs alongside their better-known planes and measuring tools. After a century of operation, the firm eventually fell on hard times and was acquired by Rabone in 1932.  Despite their prodigious output over the years, Preston tools are less common than other Birmingham makers and have become increasingly collectible.

Condition Notes: Very good vintage condition overall, with light, even surface wear consistent with age and use. Hardwood body remains straight and structurally sound, showing a warm, even patina with scattered light scratches and a small area of discoloration to one side, likely an old ink stain. Single horizontal vial is present, clear, and fully functional, with bubble responsive and easy to read. Brass top plate shows light, even tarnish with minor surface marks from handling. Top plate is stamped “E. PRESTON & SONS,” with EP company logo and “BIRM. ENG.,” all clear and legible. No splits, cracks, or repairs observed. Level has been lightly waxed and polished.
