Antique 8-Inch Spirit Level by I & D Smallwood c. 1880–1910 | Vintage English Level in Rosewood

For the artisan …  an attractive 8-inch spirit level circa 1880-1910, by the firm of I & D Smallwood of Birmingham.  Compact and finely balanced, it pairs dense hardwood (likely rosewood) with bright brass fittings—an elegant, well-made tool equally at home on the craftsman’s bench or as an elegant display piece on a gentleman’s desk or side table.

Founded by brothers Isaac and David, the firm of I & D Smallwood produced precision measuring tools from their Leopold Street works in Birmingham for more than a century before being acquired by G. Gibson & Co. in 1999. In addition to spirit levels, the firm supplied boxwood rules, slide rules, and other trade instruments to merchants and government contractors throughout Britain and the Commonwealth.  Compared with large-scale makers like Rabone and Marples, Smallwood tools are less often seen today, reflecting the firm’s smaller production and more limited distribution.

Condition Notes: Overall in excellent antique condition, with light surface wear and marks consistent with age and use. Hardwood body (likely rosewood) retains an even tone and smooth finish with no cracks or structural damage. Brass top plate shows faint scratches and minimal tarnish, all screws secure and original. Single horizontal vial remains intact, clear, and fully functional, visible through both viewing windows. Small shallow gouge on underside near one edge, and an ink-like mark visible on one side. Stamps are clear and legible: “I & D SMALLWOOD / MAKERS / BIRMINGHAM” and “WARRANTED CORRECT.” Tool has been waxed and lightly polished.  Other items in photos not included.
