For the craftsman … an impressive English bit brace by F. Thompson of Sheffield, dating from around 1890–1910, measuring over 14 inches in length, and crafted from solid beech with a rosewood head and attractive brass fittings. The frame is stamped with the original owner’s name and offered with four period square-tanged drill bits, including auger, shell, and twist patterns in graduated sizes. In all, this is a rare period tool set in superb condition, and would display beautifully in a gentleman’s study, workshop, or library.

F. Thompson was a late-19th-century Sheffield toolmaker producing hand tools for Britain’s building and cabinet trades during the height of the city’s industrial output. Braces of this type were standard equipment for joiners and carpenters, used daily for fitting doors, boring mortises, installing hardware, and preparing timber for joinery.

Before electric drills, braces were the primary drilling tool of the workshop. The broad sweep generated high torque by hand, allowing craftsmen to drive large auger and shell bits with accuracy and control.  The bits included here—one stamped Wattles & Son, Sheffield—are all UK-sourced, period examples consistent in age and origin with the brace itself.

Dimensions (Brace): 14-1/4” x 2-7/8” (Head) x 1-1/4” (Frame)
Weight: 1 lb. 6.7 oz. (Brace), 5.9 oz. (4 Bits)

Condition notes: Very good antique condition overall, with scattered surface marks and areas of light staining to the beech frame consistent with age and workshop use. Wood retains a warm, even patina and remains solid and structurally sound throughout. Frame has been lightly waxed. Turned rosewood head turns smoothly and rotates freely as intended. Brass fittings show gentle rubbing and age-appropriate wear and have been intentionally left unpolished. Brace is stamped “F. THOMPSON SHEFFIELD” and with original owner’s name “B.G. BOAST,” both remaining legible. Four period square-tanged drill bits are included and were acquired with the brace; bits appear compatible in form and insert into the chuck when the brass release button is depressed, though they do not seat fully, and fit has not been tested in use, so exact compatibility cannot be guaranteed. Included bits are as follows:

- 4-7/8" auger bit, stamped “7/8”
- 4-3/4" twist drill bit, stamped “1/4”
- 4-1/2" twist drill bit, stamped “WATTLES & SON SHEFFIELD ENG”
- 8-1/2" shell bit, stamped “9.”

Bits show expected age-related wear and light surface oxidation and have not been cleaned or sharpened. Due to size, brace and bits will be hand-wrapped and packaged carefully for secure delivery but will not be gift-boxed.
