Antique English Brass & Ebony Pocket Spirit Level c. 1890-1910 | 4-Inch Woodworking Tool

For the artisan …  an English brass and hardwood pocket spirit level, dating to around 1890-1910. Measuring just 4 inches long, the level features a brass top plate set into a finely finished wooden body, likely made of ebony, with its original glass vial and bubble intact and working as intended. Compact, functional, and in excellent antique condition, it would make a unique gift for the craftsman and a handsome display piece on a gentleman’s desk or side table.

Miniature spirit levels of this size were used by cabinetmakers, joiners, and other skilled tradesmen for checking small surfaces and fittings where a larger level would have been impractical. Their compact size made them easy to carry in a pocket, tool roll, or instrument case while still providing a quick and accurate leveling reference in tight quarters.

Condition Notes: Excellent antique condition overall, displaying light honest wear consistent with age and careful use. Brass top plate shows scattered surface marks, fine scratches, and one small dent (see photos), with overall finish retaining a bright, clean appearance. Wooden body remains in excellent condition with only minor surface wear and no significant cracks, chips, or losses visible. Glass vial remains intact and clear with bubble present and functional; level appears to operate as intended but has not been tested for accuracy. No maker’s marks or identifying stamps visible.
