Antique English Brass Pocket Spirit Level c. 1890-1925 | Compact Portable Tool in Boxwood Tube

For the collector …  an antique English brass pocket spirit level housed in its original boxwood tube, dating to circa 1890-1925. Measuring just 2-5/8 inches long, the compact level features a solid brass body with knurled end bands and an exposed vial with its bubble intact.  A delightful surviving example in remarkable condition, it would make a distinctive addition to a collection of antique tools or a gentleman’s desk display.

Pocket levels of this type were designed for use by engineers, surveyors, cabinetmakers, and other skilled tradesmen who needed a compact precision level that could be carried safely in a pocket, tool roll, or instrument case. The fitted tube protected the delicate glass vial during travel between workshops and job sites, while the small size allowed for quick leveling checks in situations where a larger spirit level would have been impractical.

Condition Notes: Spirit level and boxwood tube remain in excellent antique condition overall, displaying light honest wear consistent with age and careful use. Brass body retains a bright finish, displaying only minimal tarnish, oxidation, and surface wear.  Glass vial remains clear with bubble intact and functional, though bubble does not appear to sit at precise center when level is seated. Boxwood (treen) tube shows expected surface marks, darkening, and discoloration from age and handling, together with a small chip to one end that does not affect structural integrity. Tube opens easily and closes firmly, leaving slight gap when shut. No maker’s marks or identifying stamps visible.  Items have been lightly polished and waxed.  Other items shown in photos not included.
