For the collector … a handsome English glass hip flask by Walker & Hall of Sheffield, dating to around 1905–1920 and fitted with a removable silver-plated cup and screw-on, cork-lined cap. The clear glass body is clean and well preserved, while the engraved cup bears the name “Fred Prosser” and the place name “Tonyrefail,” a mining village in Glamorganshire, South Wales. Well-proportioned and carefully finished, it would display especially well on a gentleman’s desk, side table, or library shelf.
Walker & Hall, founded in Sheffield in 1845, grew into one of Britain’s major silver and silver-plate houses, operating large-scale workshops and showrooms in London and other cities and supplying everything from tableware to personal travel and sporting accessories. According to census records, Fred Prosser was born in 1863 and worked as a coal miner in Tonyrefail. This flask would have been a considered purchase for a miner, comparable to a good suit or watch, and likely intended for formal or special occasions rather than daily use.
Dimensions: 5” x 2-3/4” x 1-1/4”
Weight: 9.8 oz.
Condition notes: Very good antique condition overall, with light wear consistent with age and careful use. Silver-plated detachable cup bears the full maker’s mark “WALKER & HALL / SHEFFIELD / ENGLAND / 1127” on the base, along with the Walker & Hall flag emblem and the number “74.” Plate remains clean and bright with scattered fine surface marks from handling. The name “Fred Prosser” and place name “Tonyrefail” appear to be period hand-engraved. A small area of plate loss is present on one side over the “Tonyrefail” engraving (see photos.) Glass body is clean and structurally sound, with no chips, cracks, or repairs, showing minor interior staining likely from past fluid residue; interior has not been cleaned. Screw-on cap retains its original cork insert and screws on and closes securely, with no looseness, binding, or play. All components fit correctly and function as intended. Other items in photos not included.
