For the man of style … a remarkable antique English leather-cased travelling spirit bottle, dating to around 1840–1870, featuring a hand-blown glass body enclosed in its original two-part fitted leather covering.  More than just a pocket flask, this is a personal object of scale and substance.  Standing almost 9 inches tall, it would have been used for carrying spirits during travel or in the field.  It would make a treasured gift for the collector, and a striking display piece on a gentleman’s library shelf, desk, or side table.

The leather case was formed specifically to the bottle, and protects both body and neck when closed. The lower section holds the bottle securely, with hand-stitched seams following the shaped profile, while the upper cover lifts away to reveal the glass bottle beneath.  The glass displays visible bubbles, inclusions, and a slight waviness typical of mid-1800s hand-blown manufacture.  The absence of metal mounts, screw fittings, or silver-plated hardware gives it an earlier, more utilitarian character than the standardized sporting flasks that became common later in the Victorian period.

Dimensions (Closed): 8-7/8” x 4-3/8” x 1-7/8”
Weight: 14.8 oz.

Condition notes: Very good antique condition, with honest surface wear consistent with age, handling, and use. Leather surface shows scattered scratches, scuffs, rubbing, and areas of discoloration throughout, all contributing to an overall warm, aged patina and without affecting structure. Hand-blown glass body displays visible bubbles, inclusions, and slight waviness from manufacture, with no discernible chips, cracks, or repairs observed. Upper leather cover removes easily and seats securely, though a small gap remains when closed, likely from leather shrinkage over time. Bottle likely originally used a cork stopper; no cork is present. Visible stitching remains intact overall, with one small gap to stitching at bottom side of upper cover, as shown in photos. No maker’s marks found. Leather has been lightly waxed and polished with an effort to preserve original patina. Other items in photos not included.
