For the heavy lifter … a late-Victorian “Class III” Salter spring balance (hanging scale), circa 1865–1890, with a bold 5-1/4 inch brass dial, heavy forged iron ring and hook, and a rated capacity of 200 pounds.  Once a valued work tool used by farm merchants, warehousemen and dockworkers, the scale’s bold graphic form makes it an ideal display piece for a modern gentleman’s kitchen, home bar or workshop.

Founded in London in 1760 by Richard Salter, by the early 19th century Salter had become the dominant British maker of spring balances, trade scales, and government-certified weighing instruments.  In Victorian times, the company was synonymous with scales in Britain, supplying commercial trade across a broad swath of industries from agriculture to shipping.

Weighing in at over 3 pounds, our example was designed specifically for trade use.  The large dial was meant to be read quickly in poor light or outdoor conditions.  Markings on the brass plate include the crowned “VR” inspection stamp confirming manufacture during Queen Victoria’s reign, the Class III designation for regulated trade use, and “Silvester’s Patent,” referencing improvements to spring balance design that were licensed by Salter starting in the mid-19th century.

Dimensions: (Face) 5-1/4” x 5-1/4”; (Scale Including Ring & Hook) 16” x 5-1/4” x 1-1/8”
Weight: 3 lbs. 10 oz.

Condition notes: Very good antique condition overall with honest wear from age and long working use. Scale appears functional, with pointer moving freely, but has not been tested for accuracy and is recommended for display use only. Steel pointer shows visible corrosion and pitting consistent with age. Brass face plate displays surface wear and light scratches from use, with all graduations and lettering remaining clear and legible. Forged iron ring, frame, and hook show surface wear, with no discernible cracks, losses, or repairs.  Markings on dial include VR 341, SALTERS SPRING BALANCE, CLASS III, TO WEIGH 200 LBS, SILVESTER’S PATENT, along with the firm’s knotted rope trademark.  Scale has been lightly waxed; brass has not been polished in order to retain original patina. Other items in photos not included.
