Antique English Walking Cane with Flared Pommel, White Metal Cap c. 1890-1915

For the man about town … an antique English walking cane with a flared pommel and white metal cap, dating from around 1890–1915.  Measuring 34-1/2 inches in length, the cane is constructed from two contrasting woods – a shaft that is likely ash, and a darker turned pommel section, possibly walnut.  The cane retains its original brass ferrule and displays an attractive aged patina throughout.  Originally intended for everyday town use, it would make a distinctive gift and a striking display piece in an umbrella stand or a gentleman’s study.

Makers in the late Victorian and Edwardian period often combined different woods in a single cane, pairing a durable shaft with a denser hardwood handle that could be more easily turned into decorative forms.  Canes like ours with a flared or trumpet-style cap were intended for regular use in town, their broad tops providing a comfortable resting surface for a gentleman’s palm.

Condition notes: Overall in very good antique condition, displaying wear consistent with age and use. Cane remains straight, sound, and structurally solid, with handle, white metal cap, and original brass ferrule all firmly secured. Hardwood shaft shows scattered surface wear, small scratches, rubs, minor finish losses, and a few darker marks from handling and use (see photos). Darker turned pommel section shows expected surface wear, small marks, and light finish variation, with joint line between pommel section and shaft visible as part of original two-piece construction. Flat white metal cap shows scattered scratches, small dents, and shallow surface marks, all consistent with regular handling. Original brass ferrule shows expected surface wear, small dents, scratches, and tarnish. Cane has been lightly cleaned and waxed to preserve finish and character. Other items in photos not included.
