For the sportsman … a charming antique English sandwich box in Britannia metal (a pewter-type alloy), made by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield and dating from around 1890–1920. Measuring approximately 4 by 3-3/4 inches, and weighing a substantial 9.6 ounces, it features a hinged lid, rounded corners, and a D-shaped suspension ring. The box’s surface retains an attractive, softly mottled patina, and its compact size makes it well suited for display or as a small catchall for keys, matches, or even cocktail picks.
Sandwich boxes of this period were made for carrying food on hunting, riding, and other outdoor excursions, often fitted into leather cases alongside flasks or other provisions. The D-shaped ring on our example is consistent with boxes carried in fitted leather saddle cases, suggesting it was likely used for riding or hunting purposes.
Founded in Sheffield in 1806, James Dixon & Sons became one of Britain’s leading manufacturers of silver and electroplated wares, including a wide range of sporting and travel accessories. The firm also made extensive use of Britannia metal, a tin-based alloy closely related to pewter, for flasks, sandwich boxes, and tableware. James Dixon & Sons remained at Cornish Place in Sheffield for generations and absorbed fellow Sheffield manufacturer William Hutton & Sons in 1930.
Dimensions: 4” x 3-13/16” x 1”
Weight: 9.6 oz.
Condition notes: Very good antique condition overall, with solid construction and a lid that opens smoothly and closes firmly in place. Britannia-metal surface shows age-related wear throughout, including scattered scratches, handling marks, and areas of discoloration. Interior also shows visible surface wear and staining consistent with prolonged use. Suspension ring is securely attached, and hinge appears sound with no discernible structural damage. Interior maker’s mark reads “D” above Dixon trumpet-and-banner trademark, “JAMES DIXON & SONS,” and “SHEFFIELD.” Other items shown in photos not included.
