For the craftsman …  a handsome English sliding T-bevel in rosewood, brass, and steel, made by William Marples & Sons, cataloged as model No. 2220 and dating to around 1910–1930.  Measuring approximately 4-1/2 inches along the stock, it was used by joiners and cabinetmakers to copy and transfer angles when fitting timber, cutting joints, or marking angled cuts.  The dark rosewood stock and brass details give it a warm, distinctive appearance suited to display on a desk, workshop shelf, or in a collection of vintage tools.

William Marples established his Sheffield toolmaking business in 1828, and the firm grew to become one of Britain’s leading makers of woodworking tools.  Our T-bevel is stamped with the company’s triple shamrock trademark and “HIBERNIA” brand, named after the Hibernia Works on Westfield Terrace in Sheffield, where Marples moved in 1859 and remained for over a century.

Dimensions (stock): 4-3/4” x 1” x 5/8”
Dimensions (blade): 7-3/8” x 1” x 1/16”
Weight: 4.4 oz.

Condition notes: Very good antique condition overall with rosewood stock straight, solid, and smoothly finished, showing light surface wear, small marks, and minor edge wear from age and use. Brass fittings retain an even patina with minor areas of tarnish but no visible cracks, breaks, or replaced hardware. Steel blade is straight and smooth to touch, with some age-related oxidation staining but no pitting. Flush locking screw holds blade securely at selected angles. Maker’s stamp remains clear and legible, reading “HIBERNIA / WM MARPLES & SONS / SHEFFIELD” beneath triple-shamrock trademark. No warping, splits, or other significant damage noted. Other items in photos not included.
