Antique Opera Glasses by Negretti & Zambra c. 1895-1910 with Original Leather Case

For the spectator …  a superb pair of antique opera glasses by London makers Negretti & Zambra, circa 1895–1910, complete with their original fitted leather case.  Both the binoculars and case are in excellent antique condition: the optics function smoothly, and the case’s lining is exceptionally well-preserved, with bright red silk and vibrant gilt lettering.  A stunning example for its age, the glasses would make a distinctive gift for the opera or theater lover, or anyone with an eye for vintage elegance.

Compact, stylish, and sturdy, field glasses like these were a staple of upper-class travel, sporting events, and theater-going at the turn of the 20th century. Their small footprint made them ideal for a gentleman’s pocket or luggage, and offered practical magnification without bulk — ideal for a day at the races or an evening out in London’s West End.  

Founded in 1850, Negretti & Zambra were among the leading scientific instrument makers of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, holding Royal Warrants from both Queen Victoria and Edward VII. Based in London, they supplied optical and meteorological instruments to the Admiralty, explorers, and the elite of London society.  Our case’s mention of three locations (Holborn Viaduct, Cornhill, and Regent Street) dates it firmly to the company’s high point at the turn of the 20th century.

Condition notes: Opera glasses in excellent antique condition, fully functional with a smooth-turning central dial and clear optics. Moderate surface wear to leather covering present but consistent with age, with no loose sections or structural issues. Lenses are intact and chip-free, with some light internal dust and minor haze that does not affect basic viewing. Original leather case in excellent condition, with secure clasp, strong hinge, and well-preserved interior featuring bright red silk and clear gilt-stamped silk lining.
