For the man of style … an impressive antique English walking cane, featuring an 18-carat gold-plated brass knop and ebonized hardwood shaft, dating to around 1890-1910. The ornate top is engraved with the owner’s monogram “WCW,” stamped “18 CT GP,” and decorated with scrolled foliate detailing. Measuring 36-1/2 inches in length, the walking stick has a weight and substance uncommon in a formal gentleman’s cane, and would make a handsome addition to an umbrella stand or for display in a study or home office.
By the turn of the 20th century, a man’s cane was as much a personal statement as working accessory. Gold plating, as in our example, allowed the maker to use a sturdy brass fitting while still giving the cane the finish of a more expensive mount. Here, the large, heavily ornamented knop has real weight in the hand and makes this a much more robust object than a slender evening cane, suggesting it was intended more for regular town use than occasional formal events.
Dimensions: 36-1/2” x 1-1/2” (knop) x 3/4” (shaft)
Weight: 8.9 ounces
Condition notes: Overall in very good antique condition, displaying honest wear consistent with age and regular use. Gold-plated brass knop remains securely fitted, engraved on top with monogram “WCW,” and struck on the side with “S&W” maker’s mark (maker unknown) and “18 CT GP.” Gold-plated surface shows significant rubbing and loss from prolonged handling, particularly across raised and exposed areas, with brass substrate visible throughout and stronger gold color remaining within recessed decoration, creating an attractive aged brass-and-gold patina. Knop also shows scattered surface scratches, small marks, and general handling wear, while decorative detail remains clearly defined. Ebonized hardwood shaft remains structurally solid and in very good condition, with only light surface wear, small scratches, rubs, and localized losses to black finish consistent with age and use. Original brass ferrule remains securely fitted and shows expected surface wear and age-related patina; wood shaft is exposed at bottom where end of ferrule has worn through from use.. Item has been lightly cleaned and waxed to preserve finish and character. Other items in photos not included.
