For the man of style … an elegant English walking cane in ebonized hardwood with sterling silver pommel top, hallmarked for Birmingham 1924–25.  The head is hand-engraved with a scrolling foliate decoration, and the cane retains its original brass ferrule at the tip. Measuring 35-3/4 inches in length, it presents in very good antique condition with modest wear from regular use. Originally intended for town wear and formal outings, it would be equally at home in an umbrella stand, a cane collection, or on display in a gentleman’s study.

By the 1920s, walking sticks had shifted from everyday necessity to statements of taste and polish. Malacca remained popular, but ebonized hardwood offered a sleeker, more uniform finish that suited interwar style. It was strong and durable, with the dark lacquer giving the stick a more formal, urbane appearance. Combined with sterling silver mounts, these canes projected sophistication, still essential for evenings out or visits to the club.

Dimensions: 35-3/4” x 1-3/8” (crown) x 3/4” (shaft)
Weight: 8.4 ounces

Condition notes: Overall in very good antique condition, displaying wear consistent with age and regular use. Sterling silver pommel top remains bright and attractive, hand-engraved with scrolling foliate decoration, and struck with Birmingham hallmarks for 1924–25, including lion passant, anchor, date letter “Z,” and partially rubbed maker’s mark showing only a clear “W” within a rectangular cartouche, full maker no longer legible. Silver top shows scattered surface scratches, small dents, and light compression marks to crown from handling and use, with engraved decoration softened in places but still clearly visible. Ebonized hardwood shaft remains straight, sound, and structurally solid, showing scattered surface wear, small rubs, scratches, and localized losses to original black finish from regular handling, with underlying wood faintly visible in isolated areas. Original ferrule, likely brass or brass alloy, shows expected age-related marks, shallow dents, and surface wear from decades of contact with hard surfaces. Ferrule remains firmly secured to shaft, though slight internal movement or faint rattle can be heard when shaken, typical of a period fitting and not affecting display or normal handling. Silver top remains tight and secure. Item has been lightly cleaned and waxed to preserve finish and character. Other items in photos not included.
