Antique Walking Cane with Sterling Silver Pommel Top and Ebonized Hardwood Shaft | London 1927–28

For the man of style … a distinguished walking cane in ebonized hardwood with sterling silver pommel top, hallmarked London 1927–28. The domed head is engine-turned in a fine fish-scale pattern with a guilloche band at the base.  At 35 inches in length, the cane shows the wear of regular use but retains its original character. A refined accessory of its day, it would be a striking addition to an umbrella stand, a cane collection, or on display in a gentleman’s study.

By the 1920s, walking sticks had shifted from everyday necessity to statements of taste and polish. Malacca remained popular, but ebonized hardwood offered a sleeker, more uniform finish that suited interwar style. It was strong and durable, with the dark lacquer giving the stick a more formal, urbane appearance. Combined with sterling silver mounts, these canes projected sophistication, still essential for evenings out or visits to the club.

Condition notes: Overall in very good condition, displaying wear consistent with age and regular use. Sterling silver pommel top engine-turned in a fish-scale pattern with guilloche band at the base, struck with London hallmarks for 1927–28 and maker’s mark “P&S” (unidentified). Light dents to the crown (including one above the hallmark) and surface scratches from handling, but decoration remains clear and attractive.  Ebonized hardwood shaft straight and sound, showing scattered surface wear and areas of lacquer loss from regular handling, with underlying wood exposed in places. Ferrule likely original, of mixed metal, possibly brass, with age-related splitting and oxidation but firmly secured. Item has been lightly cleaned and waxed to preserve finish and character.
