Antique Wooden Snuff Box with Inlaid Bird Motif and Metal End Caps | English Tobacciana

For the collector … an attractive antique wooden snuff box, dating from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, with white-metal end caps, one showing small areas of tarnish consistent with age, and a metal bird inlay set flush into the lid.  Measuring just under 3 inches, the box is formed in a shallow, curved profile designed to fit into a waistcoat pocket.  The lid opens and closes smoothly, and has a slightly darker tone that offers a subtle contrast with the body.  Compact in scale, it would make a handsome addition to a gentleman’s bureau or side table, perhaps to hold cufflinks or a precious keepsake.

By the late 19th century, snuff boxes were once everyday companions for well-dressed men, carried on the person and handled constantly throughout the day. Wooden examples with inlaid motifs were especially popular around the turn of the century, valued for their durability and the small touch of ornament they added to an otherwise utilitarian object.

Condition notes: Very good antique condition overall. Lid opens and closes smoothly with no sticking, warping, or looseness. Wood shows two natural shades, with the lid a slightly darker tone than the body, both retaining a consistent finish and free of cracks, chips, or losses.  White-metal end caps are secure and free of dents; one end cap shows small areas of surface tarnish consistent with age. Inlaid bird and wreath motif remains crisp and sits flush with the surrounding wood, with no lifting or loss. Interior is clean and free of residue or odor. Other items in photos not included.
