Arts & Crafts Silver-Plated Salt Dishes c. 1900 | English Hammered Tableware (Pair)

For the tastemaker … a pair of English silver-plated Arts and Crafts hammered salt dishes, measuring just shy of 3 inches across, and dating to around 1900.  Marked “A&B” and finished with a softly hammered, dimpled edge, they have a quiet decorative appeal originally intended for the dining table but well-suited today to a gentleman’s desk or bureau. Offered as a matching pair, their clean, shallow bowls make them ideal small catchalls for cufflinks or other small treasures.

The dishes were originally used as “open salts”—small individual salt dishes placed on the table before salt shakers became standard. The hand-worked hammered edge reflects the Arts and Crafts influence of the period, when surface texture and visible workmanship were deliberately emphasized. The A&B maker’s mark and overall style place them firmly at the turn of the century, when Birmingham makers were producing decorative table wares in this restrained, hand-finished style.

Condition notes: Excellent vintage condition overall. Both dishes show light surface wear consistent with gentle use and age, with no dents or structural issues noted. Interior bowls display a small number of fine surface marks from use, visible on close inspection and typical for pieces of this age. Silver-plated surfaces remain bright and respond well to gentle polishing. Undersides are stamped with the maker’s mark “A&B,” accompanied by a star and crescent-form pseudo hallmarks, all clear and legible. Cufflinks and other items in photos not included.
