For the collector … a small, handsome “Invicta” moulding plane by Charles Nurse & Co. from the early 1900s, marked with the firm’s distinctive prancing horse logo and address stamp for 181 & 183 Walworth Road, London SE. Measuring just 4¼" in length, it’s a finely preserved example in dense, patinated hardwood, complete with original wedge and iron. Compact, tactile, and brimming with character, it would make a striking addition to a gentleman’s desk, workshop, or shelf display.
Founded in Maidstone, Kent in 1841, C. Nurse & Co. were respected plane and toolmakers, dealers, and importers. The Invicta branding—Latin for “unconquered”—was used on many of their tools between the late 1800s and the company’s acquisition by A.B. Salmen’s Successors, Ltd. in 1937. The Walworth Road address dates this piece to 1909–1937.
Small moulding planes like this example were used to cut decorative profiles and shaped edges on furniture components, cabinetry, and interior woodwork. Their precise, profile-specific blades allowed joiners to create repeatable designs by hand—for example, mouldings for doors, panels, and frames.
Size: 4-1/4 x 2-5/16 x 3/4 (not including wedge)
Weight: 3.6 oz.
Condition notes: Excellent antique condition overall. Hardwood body remains solid and well-formed, with a smooth, time-earned patina and only light scratches from age and use. A few small, shallow holes are present—likely historic woodworm, though the plane is structurally sound and stable. Original wedge and iron are secure but removable as intended; blade appears very sharp. Both the firm’s prancing horse Invicta logo and the full maker’s address stamp (“C. NURSE & CO, 181 & 183 WALWORTH RD, LONDON SE”) are clearly legible. Plane may be functional but has not been tested for use. Tool has been lightly polished taking care to preserve the original patina. See photos for more detail and feel free to contact the shop with any questions before purchase.
