For the history buff … an original 1898 Vanity Fair Spy print (color lithograph), elegantly presented under glass with French matting and an attractive 15 x 22-inch gold frame.  Titled "Glick," this charming caricature captures Count Albert von Gleichen (1863–1937), a British Army officer, diplomat, and nephew to Queen Victoria.  The print’s understated tones and refined presentation would make it a sophisticated addition to a gentleman’s office or study.

Spy prints were full-page color lithographs and a prominent feature of the British magazine Vanity Fair, published from 1868 to 1914.  Each issue typically included a caricature of a well-known personality, such as artists, athletes, royalty, and politicians.  The caricatures were created by various artists, often working under pseudonyms, notably "Spy" (Sir Leslie Ward, 1851-1922), who was responsible for over half of the 2,300 published images.  Spy prints have become highly collectible and provide a valuable pictorial record of notable public figures from the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Count Albert Edward Wilfred Gleichen was a fascinating figure with a multifaceted career as a military officer and diplomat.  He was the son of a German prince, a nephew of Queen Victoria, and an “extra equerry” to three British sovereigns.  Gleichen was also an author and sculptor, a rare combination for someone of his rank and responsibilities.

This is one of two spy prints currently in the shop with matching frames.
