For the history buff … an original 1903 Vanity Fair Spy print (color lithograph), elegantly presented under glass with French matting and an attractive 15 x 22-inch gold frame. Titled "Chelsea Hospital," this charming caricature captures Field Marshal Sir Henry Wylie Norman (1826-1904), a celebrated British military officer and former Governor of Queensland, Australia. The print’s understated tones and refined presentation would make it a sophisticated addition to a gentleman’s office or study.
Spy prints were full-page color lithographs and a prominent feature of the British magazine Vanity Fair, published from 1868 to 1914. Each issue typically included a caricature of a well-known personality, such as artists, athletes, royalty, and politicians. The caricatures were created by various artists, often working under pseudonyms, notably "Spy" (Sir Leslie Ward, 1851-1922), who was responsible for over half of the 2,300 published images. Spy prints have become highly collectible and provide a valuable pictorial record of notable public figures from the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
Sir Henry Wylie Norman was an illustrious military officer and statesman who joined the Indian Army at age 17 and rose to become Governor of Jamaica and later Queensland in Australia. A respected leader and public servant, he played significant roles in shaping British colonial policy during the late 19th century. In 1901, he was appointed governor of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, a prestigious role for a retired officer.
