For the craftsman … a British Stanley No. 803 “egg beater” hand drill, circa 1965-1975, measuring 12-1/2 inches long and made with a black-finished metal frame, red enameled drive wheel, molded maroon resin fittings and a 1/4-inch three-jaw chuck. In excellent vintage condition, its exceptionally clean finish and bold red, black and maroon coloring make it an attractive display piece and an ideal gift for a woodworker or collector of classic tools.
Stanley Works (Great Britain) Ltd acquired Sheffield drill and brace manufacturer J. A. Chapman Ltd in 1936, including its Industry Works on Woodside Lane. Chapman had specialized in hand drills and braces, and Stanley continued manufacturing these tools in Sheffield under its own name. Stanley catalogs described the No. 803 as a double-pinion, ball-thrust drill with machine-cut gears, a malleable-iron frame, nickel-plated brightwork and a chuck capacity of up to 1/4 inch. Our example is marked “STANLEY 803 ENGLAND” on the red drive wheel and “STANLEY ENGLAND” on the black frame.
Dimensions: 12-1/2” x 6” x 3-1/4”
Weight: 1 lb. 11.8 oz.
Condition notes: Excellent vintage condition overall. Black-finished metal frame and red enameled drive wheel remain exceptionally clean, showing only minor surface wear and small marks consistent with age and careful use. Molded maroon resin handle, side grip, and crank knob remain secure and free from cracks, with light scratches and very small chips visible on close inspection. Chuck, crank, and exposed metal components show only slight age-related wear and tarnish. Gearing appears complete and turns as intended. Markings remain clear and legible, reading “STANLEY 803 ENGLAND” on red drive wheel, “STANLEY ENGLAND” on black frame, and “RS 547-385” on crank arm. Faint handwritten notation on red drive wheel appears to read “UTILITIES INST ROAD VA”. Other items in photos not included.
